Knot Magic (Nauthiz): The Witch's Guide to Binding Intentions
The Whispering Threads: An Introduction to Knot Magic
In my years of practice at Witch's House, I have found that the most potent magic often hides in the simplest of actions. Knot magic, or cord magic, is a primitive and deeply visceral form of sorcery. It doesn't require golden chalices or rare herbs; it requires only a length of string, the strength of your hands, and the unwavering focus of your mind. When you tie a knot, you aren't just tangling fibers—you are capturing a moment of pure will and freezing it in the physical realm. This is the art of Nauthiz, the cosmic necessity that binds and releases fate itself.
Selecting Your Sacred Cord: More Than Just String
Before you begin, you must understand that the cord is an extension of your own nervous system. I always advise my students to avoid synthetic fibers like nylon or polyester. Why? Because plastic has no soul; it cannot hold an energetic charge. Seek out natural fibers that once lived and breathed. Wool is excellent for protection and shielding, as it naturally insulates energy. Hemp is grounded and sturdy, perfect for health and stability rituals. Silk, with its high vibration, is the choice for high-level manifestation and love magic.
Don't overlook the importance of color. A red cord for passion or vital protection, a black cord for banishing and binding grief, or a green cord for financial growth. If you are unsure, a simple unbleached cotton cord—pure and neutral—will always suffice.
The Ritual of Preparation: Cleansing the Thread
Never use a cord straight from the store without 'waking' it. I run my threads through the smoke of local mugwort or cedar. As the smoke curls around the string, I say: 'I cleanse thee of the hands that spun thee, and wake thee for the work of my spirit.' Only when the cord feels 'alive' and warm in your hands is it ready to become a vessel for your intent.
The Master Ritual: The Witch's Nine-Knot Spell
This is the cornerstone of my practice. The Nine-Knot ritual is a slow build of energy, like a rising tide. Sit in a space where you won't be disturbed. Take your cord (usually about 9 to 13 inches long) and hold it in both hands. Close your eyes and visualize your goal as if it has already happened. Feel the emotion of it.
As you tie each knot, space them evenly along the cord. With every pull of the string, whisper the corresponding line of the traditional chant. This is how we anchor the magic:
- By the knot of ONE, the spell's begun. (Tie the first knot at one end).
- By the knot of TWO, it cometh true. (Tie the second knot at the opposite end).
- By the knot of THREE, so mote it be. (Tie the third in the exact middle).
- By the knot of FOUR, this power I store.
- By the knot of FIVE, the spell's alive.
- By the knot of SIX, this spell I fix.
- By the knot of SEVEN, the stars of heaven.
- By the knot of EIGHT, the hand of fate.
- By the knot of NINE, the thing is mine!
Sealing and Releasing the Work
Once the nine knots are tied, the cord is a 'battery' of your intent. But magic needs a path. If you are seeking to attract something (like wealth or protection), keep the cord. Sleep with it under your pillow for nine nights, then hide it in a dark, safe place. If you are seeking to release or banish something (like an old habit or a toxic connection), you must release the knots. You can untie one knot each day for nine days, or, for a swift exit, safely burn the cord and scatter the ashes to the wind. Remember: the knot holds the power; the release directs the flow. Use it wisely, and always with harm to none.
